About Yen

Yen Chua's works are reflections of a person who has gone through varied experiences of cultures, places and values. They are echoes of her different mental states, dreams and aspirations, displaying her diverse concerns ranging from the need to save our delicate ecosystem to the aspirations of perfection and enlightenment.

Despite undergoing a lonely childhood, she has transcended it and let flourish a world of imagination and artistic quest which she shares with people who are able to identify with her world.

During her journeys to Tibet and other Himalayan regions, she professes discovering her spiritual self. Her experiences during these travels, thoughts, beliefs and the self that has undergone many transformations, have since manifested themselves in her works.

Yen's later works are most remarkably characterized by their closeness to her life and experiences. This interaction is clearly manifested by the ever-present waif or mermaid that exudes the artist’s innocence as she goes through the remarkable self-discovering journey of life.

In a career spanning over a decade, Yen is one of the promising new generation of Singaporean artists. She has come a long way with a collection of more than 300 paintings, numerous solo and group exhibitions. She is a part-time lecturer at the National Institute of Education, Temasek Polytechnic and she conducts art workshops. She also does commisioned works.

In 2002 , Yen completed her Master of Arts Degree with a scholarship from the National Institute of Education. In 1993, she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the San Francisco Art Institute, USA. Her most recent exhibition was held in August 2003 at the Art-2 Gallery in the MITA Building, Singapore. Currently, Yen is pursuing Art Therapy.
